The Gwich’in Tribal Council Self Government team has been working on Traditional Governance for the past three years.

It was back in 1998/99 that the Beaufort Delta Self Government Office interviewed Gwich’in elders. The focus of the interviews was to find out how the people governed themselves before the Europeans came.

We took all this material and started working on ways to communicate to others that we have always governed ourselves and can accomplish this again by negotiating a Self Government Agreement for the Gwich’in. One way was to videotape our Elders as they tell their stories. They tell us about how the Chief looked after his people, how they looked after each other, shared with those less fortunate, and respected one another.

The video was developed in August of 2007 by Dennis Allen of Mackenzie Delta Films. He went to the four Gwich’in communities, visited Elders and recorded their stories. He put a 30-minute video together that tells us about ways the Gwich’in governed themselves without even knowing it.

The video can be viewed on this site in the Video Gallery.
